Behind it

A scraper backend I built: one Spring Boot service with 13 scrapers for the eight stores. It also serves the site's API and the RSS feeds, and the bot posts what it stores.

  • Each scraper is built on what its store offers: an API, GraphQL or its web pages. They run in parallel.
  • New games get their rating, genres and usual price from IGDB and Steam. Their cover's main color becomes the color bar on the bot's post.

One app serves all four domains, the overview included, and picks the home from the domain it's opened on.

  • Photo gallery, floor plans or a video tour, and a seasonal price calculator.
  • Availability synced from the homes' Airbnb, Booking.com and FeWo-direkt calendars.
  • A map with walking and driving times to sights like the Wartburg and the Bach House.
  • German and English. Booking requests reach the owners by email, and the guest gets a confirmation.

Posts game patch notes to Discord. /setup is a wizard: pick a channel, tick the games you want, done.

  • Counter-Strike 2
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Dota 2
  • Marvel Rivals
  • PUBG: Battlegrounds
  • Battlefield 6
  • Dying Light: The Beast
  • Liar's Bar
  • Deadlock
  • Hytale

Steam writes patch notes in BBCode, which Discord can't display. The bot converts it in three steps: a tokenizer splits the text into tags and words, a parser builds a tree from them and closes any tag left open, and a renderer writes Discord Markdown.

  • Images, videos and carousels are dropped, even when nested.
  • Tables become aligned monospace grids.

A filter per game keeps esports news, cosmetics and teasers out of the channel.

About

I'm 25, and what I love most is the backend: working out how to actually solve the problem. Once that works, I like building the frontend that presents it, too.

My main thing right now is game-deals (opens in a new tab). The idea came from a Discord bot called Freestuff. The features were cool, but I couldn't access the game data and some of it was paywalled, so I figured I'd build it myself. It took longer than expected. Two years in, most of the work goes into the bot.

Off the clock I contribute to open source when there's time, and I automate what I can, usually by writing my own software for it.
